Roving România
Adventure Travel & Exploration

Roving Romania specialises in totally tailor-made, highly specialised tours and expeditions for very small groups.

Our Land Rover based tours with Colin as your driver, guide and translator - focus on discovering the extraordinary nature, wildife, rural culture and local history of many parts of Romania, including Transylvania, Bucovina, Maramures, the Danube Delta, and the Carpathian Mountains. Our Land Rover offers comfortable travel for up to 4 passengers & luggage on longer journeys, and 6 people for day trips. We make frequent stops on route to look at nature, visit unusual places and meet friendly local people.

For larger groups we can sometimes run two 4x4's together, or use a small minibus if the rough road potential is not needed.

Note that we rarely mix guests on our tours that do not already know each other and book together.

Hiking, cycling and mountain biking tours and expeditions with Ana-Maria as your guide and translator - enable you to explore in more detail the nature and wildlife of the Carpathian Mountains and the rural culture and local history of the Transylvanian plateau. Ana-Maria is happy to work with individuals travelling alone, couples, families with children and larger groups of up to 10 friends travelling together.

Travel by train, your own car or by hire car: Colin can also accompany you as your personal guide/translator on tours with your own car, a hire car, or by train.

Rail Travel
in Romania is significantly cheaper than travelling by car or Land Rover and is a great way to see many parts of Romania in a short time, as well as meeting interesting people. Colin especially enjoys exploring Romania by train - join him and benefit from his knowledge and experience!

Travel Planning and Consultancy. Using our extensive knowledge of off-the-beaten track travel in Romania, our Travel Planning and Consultancy Service offers advice and information for independent travellers - with or without bookings and reservations.

Colin Shaw in the Parang Mountains, and in the Szekely Land

Colin has lived and worked in Romania since 1994, but is originally from Sussex. He has been running specialised tours of Romania under the name Roving Romania for the past 15 years. Colin speaks and writes fluent Romanian and knows the country well. He is a keen photographer and you can find his photos in several recent Lonely Planet, Rough Guide, Bradt, and Insight Guide guidebooks to Romania, Transylvania and other countries. Colin runs a 1996 Land Rover Discovery, specially adapted for travel in Romania. His specialist areas include: the Carpathian Mountains, Maramures, Saxon Transylvania, Bucovina, the Danube Delta, rural culture, crafts, monasteries, bird watching, and railways.

Ana-Maria is a native of the Carpathian Mountains, born in Transylvania, Romania. When she was 10 she emigrated to Toronto, Canada where she adopted Canadian culture and became a Canadian citizen. All the same, she remained attached to Europe, returning for a year in Germany to study and a year in France to work. Through her international experience she became fluent in English, Romanian, French and German. Recently, Ana-Maria moved back to Romania where she loves exploring the mountains. She supports Roving Romania by offering hiking and cycling expeditions through the Carpathian wilderness and is looking forward to discovering more of Romania together with you.

Resonsible travel and Tailor-Made Prices

We specialise in accommodation with village families and at small guesthouses, where the welcome is warm and generous, and where you will be served with delicious home-prepared food - often using organic products from the owner's garden. Village families and private guesthouses are often of a better standard than many hotels - and they show a greater concern for your well being!

Casa Felicia Guesthouse, Sucevita, Bucovina

Most of our tour and trek planning and consultancy is done by e-mail, direct with you - the client - rather than through a travel agent.

The cost of a tailor-made tour depends upon the number of people, number of days, distance, method of transport, accommodation type, and many other factors. Some things in Romania are cheaper than in the West, other things are more expensive. WE live in Romania so don't have Western salaries and overheads to support. Then again we run very small group tours so are not aiming at the budget travel market - personal service doesn't come free!

Much of your tour price benefits local people, small businesses, local communities, and ecology and conservation projects - all IN Romania. We believe our prices are very reasonable, and all past clients have commented on the exceptional value for money for such a personalised service.

We hope this information will whet your appetite for a visit to Romania - an extraordinary country as yet unspoilt by the ravages of mass tourism.
